Currently at Channelkirk we have a nursery class for 3
and 4 year old children which runs five mornings per week. A
Primary 1/2 class which has 18 children; a Primary 2/3/4 class of 18
children; a Primary 5/6 of 19 and a Primary 7 class of 15. Primary 5/6/7
share a classroom with two teachers team
teaching.
The main building consists of two Classrooms, a Head Teacher's Office, a
Hall, a Library/Resources Area, a Staff Room, Kitchen, Toilets and Store
Cupboard. The P 2/3/4 and P 5/6/7 classrooms are situated in the main
building. The nursery and P5/6/7 classroom is located in a building
next to the school.
There is a large playing area surrounding the school. This
was re-designed by the children in 2006-2007. The community worked
together with the school to build our dream playground.
There is a tarred path surrounding the school and a large flat area for
playing ball games. A proportion of the playing area is grassed this
contains trees, bushes and flowers which the children have planted.
We have a minibeast garden, willow tunnel and dome. Our playground is a
rich learning environment and is used by all classes. The
children also have access to large playing fields within the village for
sporting activities. Go to events to see some pictures of our
transformation.
History of Channelkirk Primary School
There were other schools in the area until 1855 when a new school was
built on the site we now occupy. That school consisted of one room
until 1874 when another room was added. That building was basically
sound but by the early 1970's space became difficult and two
prefabricated classrooms were added to the site. Construction work began
in November 1991 to extend and refurbish the original 19th century
building. In 1992'93 the new school was completed, fitted out and ready
for the staff and children to move into.
